Some of these stories are connected to Shepherd’s House programs. Others help us better understand the lived experience of homelessness, recovery, and care. All are shared to help us see one another more clearly. Some names have been changed to protect some identities, however the stories are true.

Diane, a volunteer in the Men’s Center kitchen, serves over 1,000 meals a month with empathy and generosity, donating equipment, naming a new mixer “Mollie,” and embodying the spirit of giving that nourishes both body and hope for those living in survival mode.

Mother of four dreams of finding a home and starting her own business

Janetta, a middle-aged mother of four, is currently living at a Shepherd’s House Ministries shelter while she waits for housing. After returning to Bend from Tennessee, she discovered she had lost her apartment. Grateful for the meals, bed, and support provided by the staff, Janetta dreams of having her own home in Bend and starting her own cleaning business, Double D’s Cleaning Service. She urges others not to judge those experiencing homelessness, noting that everyone’s journey is different.

Straight Cut Path

Salvador, a Haitian immigrant who came to Central Oregon seeking shelter, employment, and support, is now thriving through Shepherd’s House Ministries and J Bar J, working full-time in homeless outreach and progressing toward stable housing and a career as a barber, showing how donor support transforms lives.
